Essential Amino Acids or Branched Chain Amino Acids… what should you use? What do you need to consume? Are 3 BCAA’s enough? Is it better to consume al 9 EAA’s? These are the questions that need to be considered when looking for an Amino Acid supplement. Arms Race Nutrition has put together Replenish, containing all 9 EAA’s with a very healthy dose of BCAA’s.

Ingredient Breakdown:

Potassium (as Albion™ Potassium Glycinate Complex)

Potassium is a mineral & electrolyte that plays a major role in supporting muscular contractions and nerve impulses. Albion™ Potassium Glycinate Complex is a trademarked complex of Potassium offering superior absorption and bioavailability for enhanced performance during and after exercise. Potassium is an essential mineral that supports our physical performance both during exercise and our recovery afterwards. Endurance athletes supplement with potassium to ensure they maintain performance while exercising.

Dose p/serve: 72 mg of Potassium
Recommended dosage: 3,500 – 4,500 mg of Potassium per day

Sodium (as Sea Salt)

Sodium, from Sea Salt, provides a wide variety of benefits in the body. The key factor is the source of the Sodium, coming from Sea Salt is very different from typical ‘table salt’. Sea Salt provides us with nutrients as a mineral we do not get from other sodium sources. Sodium is vital for regulating our fluid balance in the body, as well as balancing electrolytes and preventing muscle cramps when we are training.

Dose p/serve: 100 mg of Sodium
Recommended dosage: 2,500 mg of Sodium per day

L-Leucine

L-Leucine is an essential amino acid that is used in the synthesis of proteins. Being an essential amino acid, this means we need to consume L-Leucine through our diet and/ or supplements as the body cannot create it itself. L-Leucine is one of the 3 essential amino acids referred to as ‘Branched Chain Amino Acids’ (BCAA’s). Of the 3 BCAA’s, L-Leucine is often regarded as being the most important or most beneficial. L-Leucine has been shown to have a significant impact on increasing m-Tor signalling which is vital for the production of proteins in the body.

Dose p/serve: 4,000 mg of L-Leucine
Recommended dosage: 2,000 – 10,000 mg L-Leucine per serve

L-Isoleucine

L-Isoleucine is an essential amino acid that is used in the synthesis of proteins. Being an essential amino acid, this means we need to consume L-Isoleucine through our diet and/ or supplements as the body cannot create it itself. L-Isoleucine is one of the 3 essential amino acids referred to as ‘Branched Chain Amino Acids’ (BCAA’s). Isoleucine has very diverse functions within the body, ranging from stimulating immune function, detoxification of waste products and assisting with wound healing. L-Isoleucine also plays a vital role within the BCAA’s of supporting performance before, during and after training.

Dose p/serve: 1,000 mg of L-Isoleucine
Recommended dosage: 1,000 – 5,000 mg of L-Isoleucine per serve

L-Valine

L-Valine is an essential amino acid that is used in the synthesis of proteins. Being an essential amino acid, this means we need to consume L-Valine through our diet and/ or supplements as the body cannot create it itself. L-Valine is one of the 3 essential amino acids referred to as ‘Branched Chain Amino Acids’ (BCAA’s). It is unknown if L-Valine possesses any unique and individual benefits in the body. L-Valine plays a vital role within the BCAA’s of supporting performance before, during and after training.

Dose p/serve: 1,000 mg of L-Valine
Recommended dosage: 1,000 – 5,000 mg of Valine

L-Lysine

L-Lysine is an essential amino that plays a major role in protein synthesis, hormone and enzyme production as well as the absorption of calcium. Lysine is essential for the formation of collagen which is a protein that acts as a scaffold and helps support and gives structure to skin, bones and aiding with wound healing. L-Lysine supports the bodies energy production and immune function but it has also been studied to have a positive effect on blocking stress response receptors helping reduce anxiety.

Dose p/serve: 1,700 mg of L-Lysine
Recommended dosage: As part of an EAA blend, there is no ‘clinical dose’, for stand-alone benefits, 1 – 2 grams per day.

L-Threonine

L-Threonine is an essential amino acid which we need to consume as the body cannot synthesise it. L-Threonine is used to treat muscular conditions such as involuntary movements & tightness (spasticity) as L-Threonine is converted in Glycine in the body which has a relaxing effect on muscles. L-Threonine is a principal part of the structure of collagen which helps support skin and tissue health. It also plays a role in supporting immune function and, more interestingly, plays a role in fat metabolism.

Dose p/serve: 1,100 mg of L-Threonine
Recommended dosage: As part of an EAA blend, there is no ‘clinical dose’

L-Phenylalanine

L-Phenylalanine is an essential amino acid that we need to consume through diet and supplements as we cannot synthesise it ourselves. L-Phenylalanine is crucial for the production of molecules in the body such as neurotransmitters Tyrosine, Epinephrine, Norepinephrine and also Dopamine. These molecules play a major role in the bodies day to day functioning including mood and stress responses.

Dose p/serve: 465 mg of L-Phenylalanine
Recommended dosage: As part of an EAA blend, there is no ‘clinical dose’

L-Histidine

L-Histidine is an essential amino acid that is needed for growth and tissue repair. L-Histidine also helps support and protect nerve cells and is metabolized to create the neurotransmitter histamine. Histamines play an important role in immunity, digestion and even sexual health. L-Histidine protects the nerve cells by maintaining the health of the myelin sheath which is a protective barrier that surrounds the nerve cells.

Dose p/serve: 350 mg of L-Histidine
Recommended dosage: As part of an EAA blend, there is no ‘clinical dose’

L-Methionine

L-Methionine is an essential amino acid meaning we need to consume it through our diet as the body cannot synthesise it. L-Methionine plays a vital role in metabolism and detoxification in the body. It also assists the body in absorbing zinc and selenium, which are vital for health. L-Methionine plays a role in the growth of tissue in the body, in particular, skin, hair and strengthening nails.

Dose p/serve: 325 mg of L-Methionine
Recommended dosage: As part of an EAA blend, there is no ‘clinical dose’

L-Tryptophan

L-Tryptophan is an essential amino acid meaning we need to consume it through our diet as the body cannot synthesise it. When L-Tryptophan is consumed the body then converts it into 5-hydroxy-tryptophan (5-HTP) which is then converted into Serotonin. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter essential for regulating appetite, sleep, mood and even pain. L-Tryptophan is thought to cause drowsiness due to being a precursor to Serotonin and is commonly used in large doses in sleep formulas. It is needed to maintain proper nitrogen balance in the body as is essential for recovery.

Dose p/serve: 60 mg of L-Tryptophan
Recommended dosage: As part of an EAA blend, there is no ‘clinical dose’

The Formulation:

Now here is the tricky part about reviewing a product such as Replenish. You would have noticed from the ingredients breakdown that quite a few of the ingredients don’t have a clinical dose… and that is the reality of Essential Amino Acid (EAA) blends. While there may be papers and studies looking at certain ratios of EAA’s and BCAA’s to elicit certain effects, these studies haven’t been able to pinpoint one specific ratio/blend to yield those effects.

So how do we approach this product? Firstly let’s look at what you’re getting on a whole. Each scoop of Replenish will give you…

6,000 mg of BCAA’s
4,000 mg of the remaining 6 EAA’s
Potassium & Sodium

We have 10 grams of EAA’s (remember your BCAA’s are part of the 9 EAA’s) and some electrolytes. This is a hefty size serve of EAA’s for a single scoop amino supplement. In fact, this is about double what you would get from your typical BCAA / EAA supplement in a single serving. This is a great start for Replenish because at the end of the day, we always want more active ingredients per serve and this is exactly what you get with Replenish.

But what about the actual formula? It’s amazing to have a fully disclosed EAA breakdown with no hidden surprises about how much we are getting of each amino acid. Let’s have a look at the BCAA’s in particular. We have ourselves a 4:1:1 ratio BCAA blend, giving us 4 grams of L-Leucine, 1 gram of L-Isoleucine and 1g of L-Valine.

Typically, in the past, a 2:1:1 ratio of BCAA’s has been the sought after ratio as this was a studied ratio to support muscular endurance and function. On the flipside, L-Leucine is always regarded as ‘the most important’ amino acid when we talk about promoting muscle protein synthesis. With that being said we love the high ratio of L-Leucine to the other 2 BCAA’s.

How about the other 6 EAA’s and the electrolytes. We love the fact we are getting a massive 4,000 mg of the other EAA’s, while most formulas on the market will only provide 1-2 grams paired with a similar serve of BCAA’s. The electrolytes on the other hand… definitely a small dose of potassium and sodium in each scoop. It’s great they are there, but definitely not in a significant enough dose.

Taste & Consumability:

You have 3 flavours to enjoy here with Replenish:

Tart Candy Strings
Pineapple Mango
Lemon Rush

And enjoy you will! The flavours are, in our opinion, perfect for what you would want as an amino supplement to drink either intra-workout or throughout the day. Whether you opted to pop 1 scoop in a 700ml shaker or a couple of scoops in a 2+ Litre Bro Jug; the flavour is there without being overpowering, sweet without being sickly and doesn’t leave any grainy amino texture some products normally leave you with.

Between the 3 flavours you do get a good variety of options for different preferred tastes. We cannot get enough of the Tart Candy Strings flavour, especially given it is one of the more unique flavours only offered by Arms Race Nutrition. The pineapple mango is spot on and very true to taste, throw a scoop into your shaker with ice cubes and we would happily sip on that ALL DAY! And for those worrying about the ‘sour’ness’ of the lemon rush… don’t stress, it’s not too sour. It definitely has that lemon zing or ‘rush’ to it but it’s not going to make you screw up your face with every sip.

Actual Effects:

Alright, so this is where things get interesting. Were not going to give you a whole lot of ‘bull’ about us feeling the BCAA’s or EAA’s going to work as we train… no chance. We use an amino acid product during each and every training session.

We are going to talk about is going from using a BCAA supplement intra-workout to using an EAA supplement intra-workout; because that is exactly what we have done here. So the question is simple, did we notice anything different drinking all 9 EAA’s instead of only getting the 3 BCAA’s? Yeah, surprisingly we did. Now all of what we are about to say is not backed up by any science, or studies or really… any numbers. This is just what we experienced by using Replenish as our daily amino acid supplement.

We recovered better, simple as that. Nothing else changed with our supplement stack, nothing was added into our post-workout shake, no extra calories in our diet BUT we found ourselves recovering better and better after each session. Almost to the point of the next day (or two days later) DOMS just weren’t a thing… with the exception of leg day because no one escapes leg day DOMS. This really surprised us, we really didn’t expect to feel any difference but here we are.

As far as muscular endurance, power, strength and all the factors you feel WHILE training. We didn’t notice any difference from making the switch to Replenish from a BCAA supplement. However, you cant overlook the fact that we came into each workout feeling ‘fresher’ in regards to the lack of DOMS from the previous day’s session. Which is nothing to overlook because being able to recover better and more efficiently is an amazing benefit!

What’s The Verdict:

So, should you make the switch the Replenish? Yes, yes you definitely should! If you are yet to give an EAA supplement a try we cannot recommend Arms Race Nutritions Replenish enough! The whopping dose of BCAA’s backed up by one of the largest servings of the remaining 6 Essential Amino Acids makes this amino supplement one not to be messed with! Now you just have to decide what flavour…
