The King of Nootropics?

Utopia hit the shores of Australia back in 2015. It was a strange novel supplement, essentially the first of its kind. A supplement to help you be better at work. A supplement to help you perform, mentally, the best you can. Fast forward over 4 years, is it really all it’s cracked up to be?

Ingredient Breakdown:

Vitamin C

Vitamin C (also known as ascorbic acid) is a vitamin found in various food as well as dietary supplements. Vitamin C is an essential nutrient that is involved in the repair of tissue and the production of certain neurotransmitters. It is required for the functioning of several enzymes and is very important for immune system health. Vitamin C is used in supplements to assist with nutrient absorption, making sure our body can absorb all the ingredients and let them do their thing.

Dose p/serve: 500 mg of Vitamin C per serve

Recommended dosage: The Recommended Daily Intake of Vitamin C is 45 mg for the average Adult

CDP Choline (Sodium Citicoline)

CDP Choline, when consumed, is converted into two compounds, Choline and Cytidine. Choline is an essential nutrient that is required by the body to maintain our health. Cytidine is converted in the body into Uridine. Uridine is a naturally occurring substance that plays a key role in many neurological processes. CDP Choline is one of the best forms of Choline supplementation due to its bioavailability and absorption by the body. CDP Choline has been shown to help improve reaction time, concentration, attention, short and long term memory forming and recall as well as increased mental alertness. CDP Choline also has a positive effect on dopamine levels in the body, which is our ‘feel good hormone’. Sodium Citicoline is said to have one of the strongest bonds when compared to other forms of CDP Choline, this provides superior absorption and solubility.

Dose p/serve: 500 mg of CDP Choline (Sodium Citicoline) per serve

Recommended dosage: 250 – 500 mg of CDP Choline (Sodium Citicoline) per serve

Caffeine Anhydrous

Caffeine is the world’s most widely consumed psychoactive drug. Caffeine is a stimulant which means it speeds up the communication of messages between the brain and body. Caffeine is found in a variety of products such as Coffee, Tea, Soft Drinks, Energy Drinks and Energy Supplements. Caffeine hits the adenosine receptor so it can no longer fire the fatigue signal in the body.

Dose p/serve: 200 mg of Caffeine per serve

Recommended dosage: There is no clinical dose for caffeine

Mucuna Pruriens Seed Extract (standardized to yield L-Dopa)

Mucuna Pruriens is a plant that is native to Africa and Tropical Asia. The seeds of the Mucuna Pruriens plant, known as velvet beans, yield L-Dopa which is the bodies precursor to the neurotransmitter Dopamine. Dopamine has a long list of benefits and effects in the body such as improving both short and long term memory, creative thinking, reaction time, information processing and learning new information and skills. The body releases dopamine when we feel pleasure, which is why we know it as the ‘feel good hormone’, it can be released when we eat something we love or during sex. There are plenty of recreational drugs that focus on increasing dopamine levels in the brain, the degree these drugs increase dopamine can cause long term issues such as addiction. The degree of increase in dopamine levels from Mucuna Pruriens is not of any concern to develop any addictions.

Dose p/serve: 150 mg of L-Dopa per serve

Recommended dosage: 100 – 200 mg of L-Dopa per serve

Huperzia Serrata Extract (standardized to yield Huperzine-A)

Huperzine A is a compound that is found in the plant Toothed Club Moss. Huperzine A is an acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitor meaning it has an effect of stopping the breakdown of acetylcholine thereby increasing both the level and duration of action of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine in the body. Acetylcholine is the neurotransmitter used at the neuromuscular junction, meaning it is the chemical that the motor neurons of our nervous system release in order to activate muscles. Huperzine A, by increasing levels of acetylcholine, improves nerve and brain function while also improving the signalling of muscular contractions.

Dose p/serve: 200 mcg of Huperzine-A per serve

Recommended dosage: 50 – 200 mcg of Huperzine-A per serve

The Formulation:

We’ve got 5 ingredients to make up the entire active formula of Utopia. Compared to some other brands nootropics on the market, that is a fraction of the size of their formula. So does that mean Utopia is only a fraction as good as them?

Let’s break down the ingredients and their direct purpose in the formula.

CDP Choline – Sodium Citicoline

CDP Choline is here to directly increase the amount of choline we have in the body which will then increase the amount of Acetylcholine we have in the body. CDP Choline will also, indirectly increase the amount of Dopamine we have in the body through the Uridine pathway we discuss in this article.

Caffeine Anhydrous

Caffeine is a bit of a no brainer here. We all know what physical effect caffeine has on the body. Increased energy, improved cognitive ability, enhanced physical performance… it’s nothing new. Caffeine has an anti-fatigue action on the central nervous system that allows us to perform for longer before feeling the sensation of fatigue. What caffeine is not so well known for is its ability to act as an acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitor, just like Huperzine-A. It was studied that caffeine yields an effect of limiting the breakdown of Acetylcholine in the body.

Mucuna Pruriens (yielding L-Dopa)

Mucuna Pruriens is here for one reason and one reason only, L-Dopa. L-Dopa is the precursor to Dopamine in the body. Dopamine is the reward neurotransmitter which the body releases to regulate your motivation and incentive to perform a task.

Huperzine-A is in Utopia for its function as an Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitor. Meaning it stops the breakdown of Acetylcholine and thus increases the levels of Acetylcholine available in the body. To learn more about what Acetylcholine does in the body, check out this article.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is actually a new addition to the Utopia formula, with the previous version of the product remaining the same with all ingredients, just no Vitamin C… so why the addition. Enhanced nutrient absorption is what Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) is most known for. In particular the absorption of Mucuna Pruriens with only 200 mg of Ascorbic Acid showing to enhance the L-Dopa concentrations by 20% in the body. So why 500 mg of Vitamin C? Well, a 400 mg dose has been shown to ensure saturation levels in healthy young adults.

It’s pretty clear the formula of Utopia has been thought about, then thought about some more… and then finally, thought about even more! Every ingredient has been carefully selected and calculated to ensure the right dose is used and that every individual ingredient works synergistically with the others in the formula to really create something special.

On paper, we love the simplicity of this formula. It’s so clear, what ingredient is there to serve what purpose and whether the dose is at the right level. Of course, we ask ourselves, would we change anything? And the answer is, we’re not sure. We can definitely make suggestions but, as we said, this formula is so well thought out we would be afraid of ruining the balance and synergism.

Some ingredients we would love to see how they work stacked with Utopia are Acetyl L-Carnitine, Phosphatidylserine, Bacopa, Ashwagandha & Vinpocetine… just to name a few.

Taste & Consumability:

If you have ever tasted a De Novo supplement then feel free to skip to the next section. You will already know that they do not mess around when it comes to flavouring their products. We are quite confident in saying that Utopia is possibly one of the best tasting supplements on the market. Not just best-tasting nootropic, but best tasting supplement.

Surely it can’t be that good? No, it can be! But before you also skip to the next section we do have to mention why we didn’t give them a perfect 5 / 5 in the scorecard. It’s pretty straight forward, the mixability is almost perfect. You do get some sinkers in the bottom of your shaker or glass that you need to really shake up or add more water to get them to dissolve.

Other than the very minor inconvenience of a bit of sinkage action, Utopia is always a delight to consume. Peach Mango, Strawberry Kiwi, Pineapple Coconut, Blue Raspberry & Tropical Punch provide more than enough options for different taste buds and enough variety that you will never get sick of one flavour before trying one of the five available.

Actual Effects:

Here we go, the effects of using Utopia, we know you must have a lot of questions for us… such as:

  1. Does it boost your IQ to over 200?
  2. Can you see sounds and hear colours?
  3. Does it allow you to control matter and time?
  4. Will it help you with your studies?

And here are your answers:

  1. Yes, if your IQ is already over 200.
  2. Hmmm it will vary from person to person.
  3. Not yet, but we do test after every scoop.
  4. Damn straight it will!

Alright, now that we have those out of the way, let’s get into it. Utopia the ‘Focus & Concentration Enhancer’… well that’s what the tub says. Utopia is defined as an imagined place or state of things in which everything is perfect. To say that using Utopia makes the world seem like everything is perfect might be a stretch of the imagination. As for being a ‘Focus & Concentration Enhancer’… now we’re talking.

It’s no secret that Utopia is the nootropic of choice at MassiveJoes and it has been ever since we first got it in 4 years ago (back in 2015). And while a lot has happened in the industry over the past 4 years, with MANY nootropic formulas being released… Utopia still stands as king! So what is it about Utopia that no one has been able to beat for over 4 years?

Utopia’s effects are noticeable from the very first scoop. De Novo best characterised how to explain Utopia and that is as a ‘pre-work’ supplement. You have your pre-workOUT supplements to help you train at your best. Utopia is the pre-WORK supplement to help you perform your WORK at your best! And that’s the best way to explain the effects of Utopia; you feel at your very best to perform your best at doing your work.

Whether that work is crunching numbers, writing articles, smashing out uni assignment after uni assignment, Utopia has you firing on all cylinders. But how does it actually feel?

You feel mentally switched on.

You make decisions faster.

You think clearer.

You focus with tunnel vision.

You can hear colours and see sounds.

Okay, maybe the last one is a stretch but you get the idea. Even though we can question, make suggestions and even poke holes in the formula on paper… in the real world, Utopia just shines! The effects you experience just leave you wishing you had tried Utopia early. If we had a dollar for everyone that wished they had Utopia while studying… well, we’d have quite a few dollars!

The best thing about the effects of Utopia, and you can trust us when we say this, the effects don’t lose their strength, you don’t build up a tolerance. If anything, the effects get better the more you use it. We have been using this product for 4 years and 1 scoop of Utopia still provides the same drive as 1 scoop of Utopia did 2, 3 & 4 years ago! This really cements the fact that while this formula may look very simple… the effects are far from it!

What’s The Verdict?

There’s really not much else to say here. Utopia came to Australia back in 2015 as the novel nootropic supplement, being one of the first of its kind. It shot to the top of our most loved supplements list and it’s remained up there for the past 4 years. Still to this day, with very very minor formula changes, Utopia still reigns as King of the Nootropics in our opinion. If you have not given it a try yet, you should, you have nothing to lose BUT oh so much to gain!
