1.What Is It?
NeuroFactor is a patented all-natural extract of whole fruit from the coffee arabica plant, brought to us by ingredient manufacturer FutureCeuticals.
Wait, coffee fruit? Some may not know this but coffee beans are essentially the seed of the coffee fruit/ berry that grows on the coffee arabica plant. Normally the fruit is picked, harvested for the coffee bean which then roasted and made into a cup of coffee. We are all familiar with the effects and health benefits of coffee from the coffee beans but the antioxidant content of the whole coffee fruit/ berry has more recently come to light for some very interesting health benefits.
2.What Does It Do?
NeuroFactor has been shown to significantly increase levels of Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF), which we can all agree, sounds very fancy.
BDNF is a protein that is active in the brain and central nervous systems that plays a key role in neuron development, repair and also in protecting against neurodegeneration (neuron death). The physical effects of increased BDNF levels are support of our memory, improved learning capabilities and increased cognitive function.
A study published in the British Journal of Nutrition had subjects consume a single 100mg dose of whole coffee fruit extract, NeuroFactor, and observed a 143% increase in their blood values of BDNF, which is massive! Furthermore, this study was a double blind placebo study that also looked at the effects of brewed coffee, green coffee bean extract, natural coffee caffeine, grape seed extract, and chlorogenic acid on BDNF levels with none of these providing any significant increase.
Another study took 20 young adults (age 25 – 35) and had them consume the same NeuroFactor coffee berry extract. BDNF levels were measured 3 times; before ingestion, 60 minutes after and 120 minutes after ingestion of the extract. Consumption of NeuroFactor resulted in nearly a doubling of BDNF levels in the blood after only 60 minutes of consumption from a single 100 mg dose.
The most important element from these studies was that the 143% increase was seen only 60 minutes after consumption, showing that NeuroFactor has an almost immediate effect in the body. On top of this, these elevated levels of BDNF stayed elevated for over 2 hours; unfortunately they stopped testing after 2 hours so we dont know how long the effects last for.
The effects of NeuroFactor you can expect to physically experience are increased cognitive function, improved learning capabilities and improved memory performance. Of course, while you may not notice the protection against neurodegeneration, the science and studies are there showing it is happening but we need long term studies to document the long term benefits.
3.How Much Do I Need To Take?
In all the studies on the effects of NeuroFactor there was a dose of 100 mg per day used. This was the dose that provided the 143% increase in BDNF levels and therefore we are confident to say a daily dose of 100 mg of NeuroFactor is the clinical dose.
4.When Do I Take It?
With one of the physical effects of NeuroFactor being improved cognition; there are a couple times that would be ideal to supplement with it. Morning, pre-workout and/ or anytime you want to improve cognitive function are the best times to consume NeuroFactor. We would not recommend to consume NeuroFactor too close to bed as it may provide a stimulant like effect.
5.How Long Does It Take To Work?
As we briefly mentioned above, the study showed increased levels of BDNF after only 60 minutes of consumption of NeuroFactor. Not just any increase but a whopping 143% increase from a 100 mg dose. Levels stayed elevated for 2 hours but unfortunately they stopped testing at the 2 hour mark so we cannot be sure how long they stayed elevated for.
This is very interesting as its rare to see ingredients that have such an immediate effect within the body. This makes NeuroFactor incredibly valuable as a supplement ingredient for formulas that focus on providing an immediate, single dose effect for the user.
