For those on the stim-free GRIND!

Even with all the incredible ingredients on the market today, very few companies have been able to put together a complete ‘all-in-one’ stimulant free pre-workout that delivers on every element you would want from a stim free pre. They either lack ‘this’ or are missing ‘that’… very few companies have it all. Enter the Australian owned and operated Primabolics and their new product called GRIND.

Ingredient Breakdown:

L-Citrulline Malate 2:1

L-Citrulline Malate 2:1 is L-Citrulline with Malic Acid added to the Citrulline, in this case, at a 2:1 ratio. L-Citrulline is a non-essential amino acid that gets converted into the amino acid L-Arginine by the kidneys. Once converted into L-Arginine which then goes on to increase nitric oxide (NO) levels in the blood. Increased nitric oxide has a vasodilation effect on blood vessels, allowing them to relax and open up which results in increased blood flow. Increased blood flow then results in increased oxygen and nutrient delivery within the blood to the working muscles which can improve endurance, power and recovery. Malic Acid enhances our aerobic (endurance) and anaerobic (explosive) energy production as it serves an essential role in the Krebs cycle which is the bodies process of converting the food we consume into energy. The combination of L-Citrulline and Malic Acid provides a one-two punch of blood flow, endurance and performance.

Dose p/serve:  6,000 mg of L-Citrulline Malate 2:1

Recommended dosage: 5,000 – 8,000 mg of L-Citrulline Malate 2:1 per serve

Vaso6™ [Green Tea Extract (leaf)]

Vaso6™ is a Green Tea extract standardized for only the most effective blood flow enhancing fractions specifically to promote vasodilation therefore resulting in much greater production of Nitric Oxide, as well as increased nutrient and antioxidant delivery. Increased muscle pumps, recovery and performance have also been documented. Vaso6™ has changed the industry of blood flow boosting ingredients by setting a new standard of effects!

Dose p/serve: 300 mg of Vaso6™

Recommended dosage: 300 mg of Vaso6™ per serve

Potassium Nitrate (standardised to 66% Nitrates)

Potassium Nitrate is the combination of 2 compounds, Potassium and Nitrates. Nitrates increase nitric oxide levels, therefore, increasing vasodilation and blood flow to the working muscles. Increased blood flow results in increased oxygen and nutrient delivery within the body which can improve endurance, power and recovery. Potassium is an electrolyte that plays a major role in support muscular contractions and nerve impulses. This particular form of Potassium Nitrate is standardised to contain 66% nitrates.

Dose p/serve: 500 mg of Potassium Nitrate

Recommended dosage: 500 – 1,500 mg of Potassium Nitrate per serve

Creatine Monohydrate

Creatine Monohydrate is the most well-studied, researched, and, proven form of creatine. Creatine has been shown to increase the amount of creatine and creatine phosphate in the body. The more creatine we have within the body, the more we have to utilise for energy. Creatine is used in our ‘explosive’ energy system, typically used when performing short duration, high-intensity movements such as lifting weight and sprinting.

Dose p/serve: 5,000 mg of Creatine Monohydrate

Recommended dosage: 5,000 – 10,000 mg Creatine Monohydrate

Beta Alanine

Beta Alanine is a non-essential acid; meaning we can synthesize this amino within the body and it is not essential to consume from our diet. Beta Alanine is the precursor to carnosine which is a molecule we store within our muscles to help flush out acids, such as lactic acid, when required. This flushing of acids prevents their build up which therefore delays the onset of muscular fatigue and increasing muscular endurance. Beta Alanine is most known for the ‘tingling’ sensation users get, known as paresthesia. This sensation is perfectly normal and does lessen with consistent use.

Dose p/serve: 3,200 mg of Beta Alanine

Recommended dosage: 3,200 – 6,400 mg of Beta Alanine per day

Betaine Anhydrous

Betaine Anhydrous, also known as Trimethylglycine, or TMG for short is a natural compound that is found in the body. Betaine plays a few roles in the body but is most known for providing similar benefits to Creatine. Muscular Power and Energy have been studied benefits of Betaine Anhydrous. On top of this, Betaine is known for its ability to reduce homocysteine levels dramatically, even from a single serve. High levels of homocysteine have been linked to cardiovascular and other health complications.

Dose p/serve: 2,000 mg of Betaine Anhydrous

Recommended dosage: 2,500 – 5,000 mg Betaine Anhydrous per day

Tyrosine is a non-essential amino acid that is produced in the body from another amino acid called phenylalanine. Tyrosine is used by the body to create some very important hormones.

Dopamine – the ‘feel good’ hormone

Adrenaline and Noradrenaline – responsible for managing our fight or flight response

Thyroid Hormones – responsible for regulating metabolism

All of these are produced and regulated by tyrosine in the body. Tyrosine is a big player in creating a good mood, focus and mental alertness.

Dose p/serve: 1,000 mg of Tyrosine

Recommended dosage: 500 – 2,000 mg of Tyrosine per serve

AlphaSize® Alpha-Glyceryl Phosphoryl Choline

AlphaSize® Alpha-Glyceryl Phosphoryl Choline or Alpha-GPC or even A-GPC for short is, as the name suggests, a form of Choline. In fact it is actually regarded as the most bioavailable form of choline to the body and is also known as one of the most effective brain nutrients in the world. Alpha-GPC stimulates the formation of Acetylcholine, a vital neurotransmitter compound involved in all key brain functions and mental sharpness. Although Alpha-GPC is known as cognition supplement, it also has some very surprising performance benefits. Studies have shown improved athletic performance as well as incredible boosts of growth hormone levels within an hour of a single dose of Alpha-GPC.

Dose p/serve: 300 mg of AlphaSize® Alpha-Glyceryl Phosphoryl Choline

Recommended dosage: 300 – 1,200 mg of AlphaSize® Alpha-Glyceryl Phosphoryl Choline per day

Toothed Clubmoss (Standardized 1% Huperzine A)

Huperzine A is a compound that is found in the plant toothed club moss. Huperzine A is an acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitor meaning it has an effect of stopping the breakdown of acetylcholine thereby increasing both the level and duration of action of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine in the body. Acetylcholine is the neurotransmitter used at the neuromuscular junction, meaning it is the chemical that the motor neurons of our nervous system release in order to activate muscles. Huperzine A, by increasing levels of acetylcholine, improves nerve and brain function while also improving the signalling of muscular contractions.

Dose p/serve: 5 mg of Toothed Clubmoss (providing 50 mcg of Huperzine A)

Recommended dosage: 100 – 200 mcg’s of Huperzine A per serve

The Formulation:

There is no denying there is A LOT going on in the formula of Primabolics GRIND. They have come into the stimulant free pre-workout game with ‘guns blazing’ hoping to be one of the few companies that can truly make a complete stimulant free pre-workout.

Let’s see if GRIND has covered all the requirements:

Muscular Endurance – Beta Alanine, Citrulline Malate & Betaine Anhydrous

Muscular Power – Creatine Monohydrate & Betaine Anhydrous

Muscle Pumps – Citrulline Malate, VASO6™ & Potassium Nitrate

Improved Mood – Tyrosine & AlphaSize®

Mental Focus – Huperzine A, Tyrosine & AlphaSize®

Stimulant-Free Energy – Betaine Anhydrous, AlphaSize® & Tyrosine

So… what’s missing? Nothing.

No really, nothing is missing, Primabolics have done what so many companies have struggled to do in the past and that is, create a stimulant free pre-workout that covers all bases. Endurance, Power, Pumps, Mood, Focus and even energy have all be addressed by the formula! We are genuinely impressed with how straight forward this formula is, yet very well thought out at the same time.

Would we change anything?

If we had to be picky with the formula, and we mean REALLY picky, here are two changes we would consider making and would love to try…

Potentially swapping Beta Alanine for PeakO2. Beta Alanine is very tried and tested and there is no arguing against its benefits, but recent studies have really had some strong evidence to suggest PeakO2 is the more superior option for endurance, power and oxygen uptake. Only ‘downside’, if you can call it that, is there are no tingles with PeakO2 which can actually be a big factor for people that want to ‘feel’ the pre-workout kicking in.

And the second change being a dose adjustment of 3 ingredients:

Betaine Anhydrous from 2,000 to 2,500 mg’s. We know it’s a tiny change but it would help us sleep at night knowing we were hitting that magic 2,500 mg’s that has been used in studies. Would it make a difference, probably not, but that’s beside the point.

Alpha-GPC from 300 to 600 mg’s. Yep, we want to double that one and for good reason. 300 mg is a nice dose but it’s definitely on the lower side of the scale and the studies showing performance benefits used dosages upwards of 600mg’s.

Huperzine A from 50 to 100 mcg’s. Just like the Alpha-GPC, the dosing of Huperzine A is on the lower side of the scale and it would be very interesting to see how a larger dose would go.

We should disclaim that sometimes it’s not as simple as getting the clinical dose of a bunch of ingredients and throwing them together with some flavouring, especially with focus blends. Manufacturers spend MONTHS trying and testing every possible combination before settling on the final formula. We just felt we had to try and provide some feedback on the formula because it really impressed us!

Taste & Consumability:

We don’t get to say this enough, even though in this day and age we really should be… Primabolics GRIND is delicious. We were lucky enough to get a tub of Pineapple to try and we were not disappointed. Quite possibly the truest pineapple juice flavour we have tried across any type of supplement. According to owner and formulator of Primabolics, he modelled the flavour of Pineapple GRIND on the Golden Circle branded Pineapple Juice loved and enjoyed by Australians.

We haven’t been able to try the 2nd flavour of Strawberry Kiwi, but if it stacks up anywhere near as good as the Pineapple. Then we could be looking at one of the tastiest supplements on the market. Of course, this is just one person’s opinion so we will let you decide for yourself.

Actual Effects:

It’s all well and good to have a formula that on paper ‘ticks all the boxes’ but as we mentioned above there is a lot more to a product then just ingredients and doses on a piece of paper. Thankfully GRIND backs up the impressive formula with some impressive effects. We could go on all day about each element but really there’s not a lot to say.

Muscular Endurance – Great

Muscular Strength – Great

Muscle Pumps – Impressive

Improved Mood – Every Session

Mental Focus – Impressive

Stimulant-Free Energy – Noticeable

It’s funny, we first got our hands on GRIND and broke down the formula straight away, made our assumptions and suggested formula changes before even trying the product. Despite wanting to double the dose of Alpha-GPC and Huperzine A, in practice, the mental focus was very impressive. Almost to the point where we would be afraid of changing the formula to potentially ruin the synergism that is currently happening with the ingredients.

The muscular strength and endurance had us questioning why we feel the need for stimulants to go for PR’s in the gym! The pumps, as expected, were very impressive and surprising how long they hung around for after the session had finished. The mood, focus and energy was where GRIND could really flex its muscles. As far as stimulant free focus blends go, this one might take the cake. The increased alertness and dialled in focus had us truly questioning whether we would go back to a stimulant pre. So impressive that late night training sessions have no longer become a debate of whether to have caffeine or not, the choice is simple, 2 scoops of GRIND and we still sleep like a baby that night.

GRIND can be used as a stand-alone supplement but also stacked with a stimulant based pre-workout or a stimulant based nootropic should you wish. As far as ingredients to watch out for when stacking, you definitely want to take care with the focus blend (Huperzine A, Tyrosine & AlphaSize®). As we’ve mentioned a few times it’s a careful balancing act with focus blends. The rest of formula, in the 2 scoop serve, is at clinical or near clinical dose so there is no benefit to getting more of them.

What’s The Verdict:

Has Primabolics come through with the goods and put together the all-in-one stimulant free pre-workout supplement? Yes, yes they have, it is honestly as simple as that. The well thought out and balanced formula in Primabolics GRIND delivers impressive effects on every performance element you expect from a product like this. Now you just need to decide what flavour to go for.
