1. What Is It?

Sialic Acid, also known as N-Acetylneuraminic Acid, is a key component of human milk oligosaccharides contained in human breast milk as well as neural tissues.

Sialic Acid is considered to be a conditional nutrient during periods of rapid brain growth, influencing early learning behaviour and gene expression.

2. What Does It Do?

Sialic Acid primarily promotes brain development & cognitive function, but it has many other beneficial effects.

Sialic Acid can effectively promote the developmental and functional repair of nerve cells, epithelial cells and immune cells, which can improve immunity. 

Sialic Acid can further modulate the immune system in diverse ways through siglecs (Sialic acid-binding immunoglobulin-type lectins) and the influence on antibody mediated clearance of pathogens via complement activation.

Sialic Acid also shows great promise in the fight against influenza via sialylation of the antibody immunoglobulin A (IgA), which interferes with the cell surface attachment of influenza A and results in a mediation of antiviral activity of IgA.

The sialylation of IgA also works as an anti-inflammatory and has been used as a treatment for many autoimmune diseases for several decades.
Sialic Acid is also a natural MMP-1 inhibitor. By reducing the expression and activity of MMP-1, Sialic Acid can enable senescent cells back to their normal state and maintain cell stability. This importantly reduces the rate of cell decline and extends the lifespan of skin cells, an important part of preventing the signs of ageing. 

3. How Much Do I Need To Take?

Although there have yet to be any definitive studies conducted on humans, an approximate human equivalent dosage range can be determined based on the studies conducted on piglets.

In a 2007 study (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17284758/), variable doses from 40mg per kg of body weight all the way up to 240mg per kg of body weight administered on piglets were shown to increase cognitive function. 

The human equivalent dose can therefore be assumed to be approximately 38mg per kg of body weight up to 227mg per kg of body weight, or approximately 2.85 grams to 17 grams for a 75kg person (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4804402/).

However, until these doses are confirmed through human studies, there is no definitive efficacious dose.

4. When Do I Take It?

Due to its ability to improve cognitive function, it is safe to assume that Sialic Acid is best taken before mentally demanding tasks, or before an improvement in cognition is desired. 
Some applications are before working out, first thing in the morning upon waking, or before embarking on a mentally intensive task.

5. How Long Does It Take To Work?

If theorized that the transient effects of Sialic Acid start taking place within 15-30 mins of consumption. Increased mental clarity, mental alertness, cognitive function, focusing ability and improved mood may all be experienced following an efficacious dose of Sialic Acid.
