Making The Most Of Your Anabolic Window?

It’s pretty ‘bro’… okay, it is full ‘bro’ but the anabolic window is something we have all heard about and probably still, to this day, insist on having a protein shake immediately after training. MTS have taken the bro science anabolic window and supercharged it with its product Swolly. So we ask the question, is Swolly the ultimate Post-Workout Amplifier?

Ingredient Breakdown:

L-Leucine is an essential amino acid that is used in the synthesis of proteins. Being an essential amino acid, this means we need to consume L-Leucine through our diet and/ or supplements as the body cannot create it itself. L-Leucine is one of the 3 essential amino acids referred to as ‘Branched Chain Amino Acids’ (BCAA’s). Of the 3 BCAA’s, L-Leucine is often regarded as being the most important or most beneficial. L-Leucine has been shown to have a significant impact on increasing m-Tor signalling which is vital for the production of proteins in the body.

Dose p/serve: 3,000 mg of L-Leucine

Recommended dosage: 2,000 – 10,000 mg of L-Leucine per serve.

Velositol® Amylopectin Chromium Complex (Amylopectin Chromium PIcolinate, Chromium Histidinate)

Velositol® is designed to ‘boost the power of protein’; to quote some of the marketing material. To put it more scientifically, Velositol® increases Muscle Protein Synthesis (MPS) in the body and increased MPS is vital for increased muscle growth and repair. Velositol® achieves a unique result in the body. The combination of the Amylopectin and the Chromium provides enough of a response to increase insulin levels but blood sugar levels remaining unchanged. This is almost the ‘holy grail’ of results as the increased insulin will help drive nutrients, ideally, the amino acids from the protein consumed, into muscle cells while the stable blood sugar levels will ensure excess energy isn’t going to be stored as adipose tissue. The more amino acids that are driven into the muscle cells should result in great levels of Muscle Protein Synthesis (MPS).

Dose p/serve: 2,000 mg of Velositol®

Recommended dosage: 2,000 mg of Velositol® per serve

Aminogen® 5x (Maltodextrin, Protease)

Aminogen® is a patented combination of proteases from Aspergillus niger and Aspergillus oryzae. Protease are enzymes that break down proteins and peptide bonds (within proteins). Aminogen® is said to aid the breakdown, digestion and absorption of dietary protein. A study conducted on the effectiveness gave subjects 40g of whey protein per day with half receiving the addition of Aminogen®. The results of the Aminogen® in combination with whey protein were triple the rate of protein absorption, increased free amino acid levels by 100%, nitrogen retention was boosted by 32% and key amino acid levels were elevated by 250% when compared to consuming 40g of whey protein alone. These are numbers are nothing to laugh at and almost sound too good to be true… but they can be as the dosing of Aminogen® needs to be at 50 – 100 mg of Aminogen® per gram of Whey Protein. (30g of Whey Protein would need a minimum of 1.5g of Aminogen® to get these results)

Dose p/serve: 240 mg of Aminogen®

Recommended dosage: 50 – 100 mg of Aminogen® per gram of Whey Protein consumed

The Formulation:

You’ve got to love a nice and simple formula, and that’s exactly what we have with Swolly. We have 3 ingredients, 2 being patented and the third being one of the most well-known amino acids in the supplement world. So it’s safe to say we are off to a flying start.

A quick look at the tub has us reading some pretty impressive ‘potential’ benefits of using Swolly, such as:

  • Improve nitrogen retention
  • Increase amino acids absorption
  • Increase BCAA, glutamine, and arginine blood levels
  • DOUBLE the power of your protein (protein synthesis)
  • Enhance protein absorption and reduce protein excretion

Let’s tackle these claims and see which ingredient is responsible and how they stack up.

  • No relevant claims

  • DOUBLE the power of your protein (protein synthesis)

  • Improve nitrogen retention
  • Increase amino acids absorption
  • Increase BCAA, glutamine, and arginine blood levels
  • Enhance protein absorption and reduce protein excretion

Very clear to see who is the key player here in the claimed ‘potential’ benefits of Swolly, Aminogen® coming through with 4 of the 5 claims being relevant to that ingredient. Interestingly is the fact that L-Leucine got no love on the label, maybe it’s because everyone knows about Leucine? The main thing here is we get 3 whole grams of L-Leucine per serve and we are very happy with that serve!

DOUBLE the power of your protein? It may sound like an absurd claim but Velositol® is no joke. Studies have been done to test the effect a 2 gram serve of Velositol® has on the bodies Muscle Protein Synthesis (MPS) with results showing up to twice the amount of MPS when Whey Protein was combined with Velositol® compared to Whey Protein alone.

For the full rundown on Velositol® and it’s impressive studies, check out our Supplement Simplified Article. The most important thing to note is we are getting a full clinical dose of 2 grams of Velositol® per serve of Swolly.

Now for the key contender in this product, Aminogen®. We had to delve deep for this ingredient but we came through with the goods. Studies were conducted with half the patients consuming 40 grams of whey protein and the other half consuming 40 grams of whey protein with 50 – 100 mg of Aminogen® per gram of whey protein. The studies confirm all the claims on this Swolly tub. Increased nitrogen retention, increased amino acid levels, everything is true.

Here comes the BUT… but the kicker here is in the dosing of Aminogen®. To achieve the studied results, there would have been between 2 – 4 grams of Aminogen® per 40 gram serve of whey protein used. 2 – 4 grams of Aminogen®! How much do we have in Swolly? 240 mg per serve… if we apply the minimum of 50 mg per gram of whey protein per serve we must be consuming only 4.8 grams of whey protein with each scoop of Swolly.

On the flipside, if we were having ourselves a 30 gram serve of whey protein post workout, we would need a minimum of 1.5 grams of Aminogen® to get the studied results. To put that into context, that’s us taking 6 and a ¼ scoops of Swolly with our post workout shake to get the required amount of Aminogen®. You can see what we are getting at here.

Put aside the underdosed Aminogen®; you have yourself a perfect dose of L-Leucine and a clinical 2 gram dose of Velositol® here in Swolly. These two ingredients alone make a fantastic formula to be a ‘Post-Workout Amplifier’ without the Aminogen®.

However, due to the emphasis put on the ‘potential’ benefits of Aminogen® on the tub and most of the marketing materials from MTS, we have to focus on the fact that the dosing of Aminogen® is WELL below what we would hope for and we have to question whether we will experience any of the benefits being listed.

Taste & Consumability:

MTS Swolly comes in one flavour option… and we aren’t too sure what that flavour is. The label doesn’t give us a flavour or even an ‘unflavoured’, whereas the other ingredients list gives us Natural Flavour & Sucralose. There was only one option, drop a scoop in a glass of water. And for those who have tried unflavoured BCAA’s you will understand why we were concerned about that first sip. 3 grams of Leucine doesn’t have the best reputation for tasting the best, nevertheless, we took a deep breath and then a nice big sip.

Well… we were surprised. The first thing we tasted was sweetness, being contributed by the sucralose but there was no distinct flavour after that sweetness, which is amazing. We’re not sure how we weren’t getting a faceful of the bitterness of unflavoured Leucine but we aren’t complaining about it. We do need to mention that you are supposed to be adding a scoop of Swolly to your post workout protein shake that, 99% of the time, will be flavoured.

And that’s exactly how we used Swolly, except for this once off taste test. MTS has done everything in their power to make sure Swolly won’t ruin the flavour of your post workout shake, which is great because MTS Machine Whey has some of the best flavours going around. No bitterness, no after taste, no difference in texture we are very impressed with the mixability of Swolly.

Our only, tiny, criticism is to do with the sweetness. The first thing we tasted with the glass of water test was the sucralose sweetness. We know some people out there don’t enjoy the sweetness of some protein flavours and purposely choose protein powders that are known to be less sweet. Adding a scoop of Swolly, although only small, may add enough sweetness that someone quite sensitive may not enjoy it on a daily basis.

All in all, MTS have done an amazing job at the consumability of Swolly.

Actual Effects:

So, does Swolly come through with the goods? Did we feel the doubled power of protein, the increased nitrogen retention or even the enhanced protein absorption?

Of course we didn’t! But we were never expecting to ‘feel’ these direct effects as the only way to be sure would be through vigorous blood testing to replicate the conditions that were used in the studies. However, we did feel effects that can be contributed back to some of these benefits we have been told to expect from Swolly.

Increased feeling of recovery is the first we noticed from adding a scoop of MTS Swolly into our post-workout stack. Our current post-workout stack being 2 scoops of CORE ISO and 2 scoops of Creation HCLPure. Within the first week of adding this product into our stack, we started to notice we were pulling up from sessions feeling fresher and fresher. Of course, we couldn’t help but wonder if we were unintentionally dropping the intention of our training but we quickly reassured ourselves with another 3 ‘volunteers’ here at MassiveJoes experiencing the same effects within the first week of using Swolly.

Along with this improved feeling of recovery, comes reduced DOMS. DOMS is short for Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness or in simple terms, that feeling in your legs one or two days after leg day when they just ache, and you complain every time you have to stand up or sit down. We often associate the feeling of DOMS as a sign of a great workout, and to a degree that is correct, but that doesn’t mean if we don’t feel DOMS we didn’t train enough. It’s very possible to train incredibly hard and with a strong focus on recovery & nutrition, not feel DOMS a day or two after. This is exactly what we experienced with Swolly.

We actually experienced a significant reduction in muscle soreness in the days after training that particular muscle group. So what does this mean? It means that Swolly works. While we cannot back up the claims on the label we can make the assumption that the real world benefits we experienced from Swolly can be contributed to increased protein absorption, increased MPS, increased Amino Acid levels being retained in the body.

Still a little bit confused? Don’t worry, we will try to clear this up. MTS Swolly enhances the bodies absorption & utilisation of protein. This will help improve recovery from training which will then allow you to train harder more often and that will, hopefully, allow you to stimulate more muscle growth and/or improve your athletic performance faster.

On the flip side, because your body is absorbing & utilising protein more efficiently, this does propose the question of do you still need to consume the same level of protein from your diet? Hypothetically speaking, if you are content with your ability to recover from training sessions with your current macro consumption you should be able to reduce the amount of protein being consumed from your diet and still obtain an equal level of recovery from training by adding Swolly into your stack. This would be particularly useful for those in prep or trying to reduce body fat as protein levels need to be maintained during this process and calories have to be cut from carbohydrates and fats. Just some food for thought…

What’s The Verdict?

It’s been a bit of a rollercoaster ride; from an impressive formula to lacking dosages but being backed up with some impressive effects. It’s safe to say that MTS Swolly does deliver on the general basis of its claims. Could those benefits be better with some formula changes? Possibly, but we wouldn’t know without trying them out. Will Swolly help you get the most out of your post-workout shake and protein throughout the day? Yes. Will Swolly help you recover more efficiently and allow you to perform better? Yes. I don’t know about you but that sounds good to me.

How can we help?
